Wickes, born in Montreal, served eight years as a pilot in the R.C.A.F., flying F-86 Sabre Jets in Europe during the Cold War. He moved to the cosmetic industry, soon establishing his own company as an importer and national distributor. He took an early retirement to begin his writing career in 2001.

The author lives in South-Western Ontario, along with his two German shepherds, Guinness and Diego.
