It is with pleasure to publish this story by an aspiring Author and Poet, Lynne Flory, Co-Owner of Twin-Fit Personal Trainers Inc. This story details her experience with her twin sister during a "Tri It Triathlon". Enjoy!

It was an amazing experience. It seems as though things were going in slow motion.

As you know Sunday morning was quite cool around the 54 degree mark. Our race was to start at 8:15am, so not much time to warm up with the sun. At the very least the sun was shining and the wind had died down. The added benefit to the cold weather was that the water felt warm.

Since there were 151 participants in the Super Sprint (375m swim, 10km bike ride, 2.5km run) we had to enter the water in waves. We were in the third wave. Our goal was to stay close and then let the race unfold from there. We stayed close by around the first buoy and headed over to the next. The distance was a lot farther than we had trained for.

I spent a fair amount of time on my back kicking my feet, just to get my heart rate under control. Carole took the lead after the second buoy and I struggled on the way back to the shore. I was humbled by being passed by some pink bathing caps who were in the wave behind us. They started 3 minutes after we entered the water. At long last after about 13 minutes we finally reached shore with Carole exiting the water first. The swim was part of the race that I dreaded the most. Now that it was over I could enjoy the rest of the race.

We didn't seem to have an urgency. We took the time we needed to dry off, fuel up and headed off on the bikes. Carole headed out first, but I was undaunted, I knew I could catch up. Partway along the way I passed her and lead the way back to the park. I loved the ride, for me it was what I looked forward to the most and it did not disappoint. I love the challenge of the bike with all the elements, wind, other bikes, traffic, hills and valleys.

On the way back to the park the wind was at my face blowing hard, but I refused to give in to it. I kept trucking along and soon was back at the bike racks. Spectators were cheering on everyone, which gave you a huge boost. Once back at the bike racks, I had the option to continue on my own and complete the race or wait for Carole. It did not feel right to go on my own. My instincts told me that I should just chill and wait, time was not the important part. I had to know that she was okay, that she did not have a flat tire or had fallen off the bike.

I decided to wait for her and she came around the corner all smiles. I knew I had made the right decision. After we refueled we headed out for the last part of the run. We stayed together running and walking and crossed the finish line together. As the announcer put it "they got out of the water together and finished together".

When you get to know us a little better you will see that we are so closely connected that often times we speak of "We" and very seldom use the term "I". For me there was nothing better than to accomplish your goal and be able to share it with your sister. We finished one second apart according to the timing chips in a time of one hour and two minutes. It was not blazing speed, but for us it was not so much about the number as it was finishing the race.

To make things even better our dear friends from Philadelphia came up here this weekend just to come and watch our race. They were cheering us on and every time I needed some encouragement I saw their smiling faces. Big hugs at the end of the race. Life does not get any better than this.

According to an article by Peter Nowak from CBC News, "The Battle of the e-Readers", Amazon, Kobo and Sony are locked in a vicious fight for market share, with each offering different e-ink devices.

"Books have been the last medium to get with the digital revolution, but that's changing quickly.

E-books made up about nine per cent of total book sales in the United States for 2010, as of the end of August, according to the latest figures from the Association of American Publishers. A year earlier, they comprised only three per cent, which means they're now in major growth mode.

The big driver of this explosion is the availability of devices on which e-books are read. Online seller Amazon got the ball rolling in 2007 when it launched the Kindle, a book-sized electronic device that featured an "e-ink" display - a high-contrast, low-power screen that simulates the look of a printed page.

The Kindle seems to be a hit, with Amazon consistently touting it as its best-selling product, although the company has yet to disclose how many units it has actually sold," states Peter Nowak.

The Daughter of William Saucier, Known as “The Grey Ghost” Shares Stories of the FBI, KKK, Martin Luther King, James Earl Ray and J. Edgar Hoover.

The Boys of Birmingham Written by P.L. Ryan tells the story of FBI Agent, William Saucier, and includes stories of how he helped disintegrate the KKK in Alabama in the 1960’s. The Boys of Birmingham provides readers with insight into this historical time.

This intriguing eBook spins the story of the FBI career of William Saucier, known as “the Grey Ghost,” “the Sauce,” and “the Bay City Strangler” in his identity as one of the Boys of Birmingham. That’s what the northern Irish Catholic membership of the FBI office in Birmingham, Alabama was called during the 1960s.

The eBook tells how P. L. Ryan, the daughter of Saucier, and her family had to weather the hot climate and bigoted hostilities of the area, including attacks by the Ku Klux Klan. But the Boys managed to “spook” the Klan back, as the book recalls many humorous stories about how their FBI work managed to disintegrate the local KKK. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover had created the Boys of Birmingham based on comments Dr. King made concerning how the FBI had no black agents, and that the southern FBI was “sympathetic” to racism. Hoover answered King’s complaint by sending northern federal agents down into Birmingham whenever they committed a minor infraction.

Becoming one of the “Boys” was actually considered to be a form of punishment, sending an agent down into “the Pits of Hell.” But all the Boys eventually developed lifelong friendships as the result of this “punishment,” with their families becoming very close.

The Boys also were ordered to investigate Dr. King during his stays in Birmingham, becoming his “shadows” and being involved in the infamous Hoover tapes of King’s “indiscretions.” New information about these is told in this book for the first time, as also new information is given concerning the assassination investigation. The book tells how Saucier, as the lead field agent in charge of the Birmingham investigation, and the other Boys locate the identity of James Earl Ray, King’s killer. And Saucier himself is the agent who discovers a way to directly locate Ray, which swiftly results in his arrest. Thrilling, gripping and hilarious at times, this book covers the exploits of Saucier and his fellow agents, including one man, the Dallas Duplicator, who’s heavily involved in President Kennedy’s assassination. He may have been the infamous “blond man” who picked up the fifth bullet in Dealey Plaza, site of the Kennedy murder and source of the gunfire. This agent was the same one who arrested Lee Harvey Oswald, Kennedy’s presumed killer, and this book may also bring some new information concerning that investigation to light.

Due to my parents’ encouragement, I completed my bachelor’s degree in psychology, becoming a social worker dealing with the underprivileged in America.

I have struggled as a divorced single parent and am the blessed mother of three children, being also the proud mother of a Marine who fought in the Iraq War. I get to smile at my emerging young daughter every day as she becomes a young woman, and my youngest son has kept the vital spark in me alive. But I have never met someone so alive as my nephew Joseph, also a Marine and true life brother to my oldest son...and there are so many other people, like my brothers, who have profoundly touched my life. You could say my hobbies are my children, as they’ve been a joy to raise and a challenge at the same time.

I have to say I love to knit, thanks to my boss, who is the best - and who helped me rediscover it from my high school day. I have written many more things that perhaps someday you will see published, but this book was so intense and personal that I can finally say "Dad, I got it done!"

As an Author, I understand the challenges that writers face when it comes to writing a book. So, I've provide you with 10 tips on how to write an eBook!

1. Make the commitment to write your eBook.

2. Come up with an eBook idea. Know what you are going to write about. Don’t write something because you think it will sell; write it because you love it. Your love will show in your work and the rest will come.

3. Establish a writing schedule.

4. Research before you begin.

5. Develop a mission statement and an eBook outline. Include what you’re writing about and the effect you want it to have on the reader.

6. Identify your target audience.

7. Develop a chapter outline and create a short description of your eBook.

8. Start writing. All you need is a computer with software (e.g. Microsoft Word).

9. Revise and rewrite.

10. When it’s ready, let friends, colleagues and others read it. Ask for their feedback and apply or don’t apply that feedback.

I just read a great article called "Generation Internet" in BMW Magazine written by Professor Urs Gasser. He provides great insight regarding today's young people and their relationship with technology.

I have and thought you may be interested in what I found out. Here's the scoop; any content with no current copyright or patent and no laws which restrict its use by the public is part of the public domain and can be used and distributed freely by anyone.

For a book to be a part of the public domain, it must meet all of these conditions: first published before January 1, 1923, the author must have died at least 70 years before January 1 of the current year, no perpetual copyright has been passed and no copyright term extension has been passed for the work.

I recently attended a writing workshop facilitated by Brian Henry and loved it. It's just what I needed to get back into the writing groove. I've attended several of his sessions in the past and highly recommend them. While learning tips and techniques for writing, you also become motivated just by being in a room filled with other authors like yourself.

As many other writers do, I often get distracted by life. But amongst all of the distractions, I feel like something is missing, and that something is writing.

When I'm in the writing zone, I'm tapping into my creativity and passion and am rewarded by a feeling of fulfillment. So, why is it that so many authors procrastinate when it comes to writing?

Probably because we have to focus on what pays us the most and unless you are a professional writer or you have a deal with a Publishing House, you probably aren't making a lot of money from writing. But remember one of the laws of the Universe..."What You Focus On Expands".

How to Prepare Your eBook for ePublishing

Many of you may be wondering if it's difficult to ePublish. Let me tell you first hand, it's easy breezy lemon squeezy!

Here's a checklist to help you out;

1. Ensure that your eBook has been proof-read/edited and converted to PDF,(the most common format for eBooks).

2. Secure the file Properties of your eBook; while in Acrobat, click File / Properties /Security. You can limit copying and printing if you choose. Also ensure that the Title, Author, Subject and Keywords are all filled in correctly (found in Properties / Description) and that the file name reflects the name of your eBook and includes your name. Be sure to click OK to save the changes.

3. Prepare an Author biography.

4. Have a photo of yourself ready in .jpg format. File size should generally not exceed 100 KB.

5. Prepare a brief summary of your eBook.

6. Prepare a sample of your eBook (1 to 5 Pages in PDF).

7. Compile testimonials, if you have any, in .pdf.

8. Prepare an eBook cover(usually in.jpg format).File size should not exceed 100KB.

David Pogue - New York Times Technology Expert Comments on eBooks

Hi!

David Pogue, a Technology Expert and Writer for the New York Times was on CBC Radio this morning talking about eBooks. He examines the intersection of culture and technology and writes about it on his blog, "Pogue's Posts". He assured listeners that traditional books will not disappear, "Things don't replace things, they add to them."

He stated that on-screen reading is definitely increasing and will continue to do so and that the kids of today are already doing the majority of reading on screen. Many folks will still hang onto their hardcover and paperbacks, but the evolution of the new eBook reading devices are making the transition to eBooks easier by making it more like a book experience.

David also talked about copyrighting eBooks and how some ePublishers may have gone over board. For example, the Kindle can only download eBooks from Amazon and are not transferable to other eBook reading devices.

What happens when the Kindle becomes outdated or if customers want to purchase another eBook reading device? They won't have the flexibility to transfer their already purchased eBooks. The music industry attempted something like this and finally had to give in, as customers refused to accept the limitations.

eBooks are all the buzz, but many people are still unsure of what they really are. Quite simply, they are books in an electronic format that can be read on many devices including your home computer, laptop, blackberry, iPad and eBook Readers, to name a few.

I received a Sony Reader, Touch Edition for Christmas last year and absolutely love it. I am able to download hundreds of eBooks and read them at my leisure, any time, any place. We, at eBookGuides4Life sell eBooks in PDF, which we found to be the most common and user friendly format for our readers.

I encourage avid readers and not-so-avid readers to read an eBook today. It's not only convenient but is environmental friendly. There's speculation out there that by the year 2020, over 95% of reading will be on screen. (The trees will be happy to hear that!)

If you still love the feel of a traditional hard copy book in your hands, then you may want to test drive an eBook on your home computer first.

Overcoming Procrastination - An Author's Own Road Block to Writing an eBook

Have you been meaning to write a book, but have too many other things to do?

I've experienced this same dilemma and can recall myself saying, "Someday I'll write a book". With determination and persistence, I finally did. I actually wrote two novels and a guidebook on how to write an eBook. The feeling of writing a book is very rewarding and I highly recommend it.

I used several techniques, including establishing a writing schedule, which I believe was the key to my success. I set aside time each day to write. Mornings worked best for me. So, I blocked my calendar, turned off my blackberry and became "unavailable". I call it "going underground". It worked for me, maybe it'll work for you.

Have you been wondering why the price of eBooks seems to be inconsistent?

I've seen eBooks range from $2.00 to $150.00. The thing is with most eBook sites, you don't really don't know what you're paying for until you've made the purchase and then it's too late.

We at eBookGuides4Life, have a transparent approach to this to assist potential eBook buyers. We provide the number of pages, file size, sample of the eBook, testimonials (if available) and an Author biography. We want to ensure that our customers have a good understanding of what they're purchasing.

DRM - Digital Rights Management for eBooks

To use DRM or not to use DRM...that is the question. Digital Rights Management has been a hot topic since the late 90's and continues to be.

The definition according to Wikipedia,
"Digital rights management (DRM) is a generic term for access control technologies that can be used by hardware manufacturers, publishers, copyright holders and individuals to impose limitations on the usage of digital content and devices.

The term is used to describe any technology that inhibits uses of digital content not desired or intended by the content provider. The term does not generally refer to other forms of copy protection which can be circumvented without modifying the file or device, such as serial numbers or keyfiles.

It can also refer to restrictions associated with specific instances of digital works or devices. The use of digital rights management is controversial. Proponents argue it is needed by copyright holders to prevent unauthorized duplication of their work, either to maintain artistic integrity or to ensure continued revenue streams.

Some opponents, such as the Free Software Foundation, maintain that the use of the word "rights" is misleading and suggest that people instead use the term digital restrictions management. Their position is essentially that copyright holders are restricting the use of material in ways that are beyond the scope of existing copyright laws, and should not be covered by future laws."

As an Author are you concerned that once your eBook is out there, you will no longer have control and are worried about copyright infringement?

Here's a question for you; once your eBook is downloaded, if a reader enjoys it so much that they want to pass it along, how different is that from them lending their hard copy book to a friend? What about a library purchasing your hard copy book and lending it out hundreds, maybe even thousands of times?

I remember reading one eAuthor's position on this and he said, why not make a lemon into lemonade? If readers want to pass it along, let them. Make it work for you by promoting yourself within your eBook by including the website where readers can purchase your eBook or refer them back to your own website. It really depends on the level of comfort you have.

DRM is still evolving and there are many DRM tools on the market, all of which cost money and have a lot of restrictions themselves. (i.e. A downloaded file may only be granted permission on one computer, causing issues for the reader if they want to transfer it to an eReader, laptop or another device to read.) DRM tools can track and limit the number of times an eBook is downloaded, so then what? I highly recommend doing your research before investing any money into something that may not ease any of your original concerns.

eCommerce is a whole new world for many Authors. I too have asked myself the DRM question and have found a level of comfort by securing my eBook in PDF with copy restrictions. I have chosen the path of trust and am just putting it out there.

ISBN Definition and the Question, Who Owns the ISBN?

I've participated in many on-line conversations about ISBNs lately and wanted to share some information with you.

ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number which is a commercial identifier for books. I have included the definition according to Diane Shired, CTM, from the Birds-Eye.Net website:

"Meaning of ISBN - "International Standard Book Number", is a commercial identifier for books. The ISBN is 10 or 13 digits long and it uniquely identifies internationally published books and book-like products. The number consists of 4 to 5 parts:

1. If a 13 digits ISBN, the number has a 978 or 979 prefix EAN (European Article Number) that ensures no two starts the same
2. Country or Language Code (0, 1 =English; 2 = French; and so on. Can be up to 5 digits)
3. Publisher (assigned by the agency)
4. Item Number
5. Check Digit (a single digit computed from other digits) if 10 it’s replaced by “X”

There are many ISBN agencies worldwide; each agent has the exclusive right to assign ISBNs to publishers in their area/territory. For instances, the United States agency is the only one authorized to assign ISBNs to publishers within the U.S., Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and all its territories. Once the agency assigns an ISBN to a publisher, then that publisher can assigned the number to their publications. The publisher cannot re-assign, re-sell, transfer or split their assigned numbers with other publishers.

The ISBN system was established in 1996 in the United Kingdom by W.H. Smith. It was originally SBN (Standard Book Numbering) that was used until the mid-seventies. However, the International Standard (ISO) 2108, ISBN was introduced in 1970."

Thanks Diane for the definition. Here in Canada, the Canadian ISBN Service System (CISS)allocates numbers to publishers/ePublishers (at no charge) who in turn assign them to books/eBooks that they are publishing.

The ISBN belongs to the ePublisher, not the Author or the eBook. So, heads up for those folks that are being charged for an ISBN, it may not even belong to you, depending on the country you ePublish in.

I am continually looking for information on how this is handled in other countries and welcome the input from you.

eBook Readers are Becoming Mainstream - What's New, What's Next

Hi.

Last week when I was at the gym waiting to go to my BodyFlow class (which I totally love), there was a woman standing beside me reading an eBook from her Sony Reader.

I couldn't help but ask her how she liked her eBook Reader. She replied that she absolutely loved it and takes it everywhere with her. Confirmed, eBook readers are becoming mainstream. I'm not the only who believes this. Nik Taylor, MSN Techs & Gadgets is saying the same thing. (link below)

eBook Readers were the Hottest Product Category at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show)

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) was held in Las Vegas in January. The gadget industry previewed the next 12 months of innovation and according to an article in the Times On-Line, eBook readers were the hottest product category.

If you don't have an eBook reader, don't sweat it. Like all technology, they will continue to improve and drop in price. In the meantime, you can still download eBooks from our site, eBookGuides4Life.com, as all of our eBooks are in PDF format, which can be read from any computer, laptop, blackberry, etc.

Also, keep in mind that some eBook reading devices have limitations,(i.e. If you buy a Kindle, you are limited to downloading eBooks from Amazon only). I have a Sony Reader and love it!

Fear Can Stop Us From Moving Forward

Hi.

I recently visited the CN Tower in Toronto, Ontario. For a long time, it was the tallest free standing structure in the world. We had family visiting from out of town and going up the CN Tower is always a favourite...well for our guests, not necessarily for me. I have a fear of heights, but am determined to move beyond that.

My belief is that fear can hold us back from moving forward in life and that we can miss out on many rewarding experiences. With the encouragement of my nephews I not only went up the Tower, I went out on the observation deck and even stood on the glass floor. This was a huge feat for me, as I had been glued to the inside wall of the building most of the tour.

There was no way, that I was going to miss out on an experience with my family by waiting on the ground while they went up. I'd rather be a participant than a spectator, so I pushed myself beyond my comfort level.

So, you might be wondering where I'm going with this. As an Author, I understand how putting your work on-line can be something that takes you out of your comfort zone...or it might even scare you. But, speaking from experience, I've discovered that in order to get my work out there and to establish myself as an Author, epublishing was a great option.

I do still dream of seeing my novels in print some day, but that dream is fading as I realize that epublishing is the future. So, I encourage you to take yourself out of your comfort zone and consider epublishing. It's your choice...do you want to be a spectator and watch technology whiz by, or do you want to jump on board and participate?

People Spend More Time on the Internet Than Watching Television!

Hi.

During my commute to work this week, I heard on the radio that we are now officially spending more time on the internet than watching television.

That doesn't really surprise me and concurs with the philosophy of Mitch Joel, Author of "The Six Pixels of Separation". Mitch suggests that people want to have an interactive experience and t.v. just doesn't cut it. We actually create our experience on the internet via social networking.

I thought I'd see what was out there for statistics and found something from 2008 that I wanted to share with you. Google Book Search - What's Google Up To?

Hi!

Spring has sprung, the grass has 'ris, I wonder where Google is? Better yet, I wonder what they're up to.

I found this interesting article in the New York Times. According to the article, Google plans to "digitize every book, famous or not, in any language, published anywhere on earth - found in the world's libraries, as part of the company's core mission to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful."

That's a lot of information...and a great undertaking by Google. Looks like they'll need more server farms to house all of these eBooks!

Hi. It was beautiful here in Ontario today. The sun was shining through my office window as I interacted with other folks on the internet through social networking. Very cool stuff.

According to Dr. Nick Bontis, Associate Professor of Strategic Management at McMaster University and known as one of Canada's leading management guru's, there are 1.8 billion internet users.

That's how many potential readers there are who could enjoy reading eBooks. That's alot of people, considering the world population is approximately 6.6 billion. Cool eh? (yes, I am Canadian!)

I've spoken to many Authors who have spent thousands of dollars on printing their books, which then collect dust in boxes in their garage. If they are able to generate sales, they spend hundreds of dollars distributing their books, not to mention the many hours of their own time that they put into the entire process.

I was fortunate to hear Mitch Joel, Author of "Six Pixels of Separation", speak at the Human Resources Professional Association Conference in Toronto, Ontario. If you haven't read his book yet, I highly recommend it. He says,"The truth is, we no longer live in a world of six degrees of separation. In fact, we're now down to only six pixels of separation, which changes everything we know about doing business."

He's bang on...it does change everything we know about doing business, including how we publish literary works. According to Mitch, now one person can express themselves to the world. Wow...great news for us Authors!

Gene Wilburn wrote an article in "here's how" magazine called Digital Reading. (Vol. 9, No. 1). He reviews the eBook Readers currently on the market and writes "Electronic book readers may be on the verge of breakout status. They've sold so well in the U.S. and some analysts think 2010 will be the year when the e-reader becomes mainstream."

He also states that "there'll be more flexible models later this year and more Canadian options as well. They should also drop in price as the market becomes more competitive." Another great reason to consider ePublishing your book!
